Ha Long Bay’s activities divide between what you do on a cruise and what you do independently from Cat Ba Island. The cruise activities are the most accessible; the Cat Ba options are often more memorable.

Sea kayaking

The best activity in Ha Long Bay. Kayaking through the limestone arches, into hidden lagoons (hồ), and through low cave entrances gives access to parts of the bay that cruise boats cannot reach.

Luon Cave: A popular kayaking destination in the main Ha Long Bay — a short paddle through a low cave entrance (you have to duck) opens into a circular enclosed lagoon surrounded by limestone cliffs. Beautiful. Most mid-range and luxury cruises include this.

Bright Cave (Hang Sang Toi): On Lan Ha Bay, this cave has an enclosed beach inside. Accessible only by kayak through a water-level passage. The contrast between the dark cave passage and the sunlit beach inside is one of the best experiences in the bay area.

Dark Cave (Hang Toi): Also on Lan Ha Bay, with a different character — the beach inside is in near-darkness, lit only by small gaps in the limestone roof. Kayaking in with a headtorch. Not for the claustrophobic, genuinely extraordinary for everyone else.

Most cruise boats carry sea kayaks and include guided kayaking in the tour price. Self-guided kayaking from Cat Ba is also available — rental from ₫150,000–250,000 per hour from Asia Outdoors.

Cave visits

The main bay has several large cave systems open to visitors:

Thien Cung Cave (Heavenly Palace Cave): The most visited cave in Ha Long Bay — 130m long with elaborate stalactite and stalagmite formations. Electrically lit (coloured lights, some of which are garish). Impressive scale despite the crowds. Access included in most main bay cruises.

Dau Go Cave (Wooden Stakes Cave): Historically significant — the Vietnamese stored wooden stakes here before using them to defeat the Mongol fleet in 1288. Three large chambers with impressive formations. Less crowded than Thien Cung.

Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave): Largest cave in the bay. Two chambers, electric lighting, good stalactite formations. Entry ₫40,000 on top of cruise costs. The queue at the entrance can be slow in peak season.

Sunrise and sunset from the boat deck

The primary reason to do an overnight cruise. The karst landscape at dawn — the mist that sits between the islands in the early morning, the light that turns the water silver — is the experience that Ha Long Bay is actually famous for. The sunset is good but the sunrise is better; set an alarm.

Most cruise boats anchor in protected bays for the night. The specific location varies by operator, but the overnight experience of the bay with minimal boat traffic and the dawn light is consistent across cruise tiers.

Fishing village visits

Several floating fishing villages exist within Ha Long Bay — communities built entirely on the water, with homes, schools, and fish farms on floating platforms. Vung Vieng and Cua Van are the two most commonly included in cruise itineraries.

The villages are a genuine historical community with a different way of life that’s been practised here for generations. The fish farming is the primary economy (grouper, sea bass, abalone). Most cruise visits are brief (30–60 minutes); the interaction is limited but the visual experience of a floating village surrounded by limestone karsts is worth having.

Rock climbing (Cat Ba)

See the Cat Ba rock climbing guide. Cat Ba Island is the rock climbing centre of Southeast Asia, with routes on the karst pillars and deep water soloing (climbing above the sea and jumping in). Asia Outdoors is the main operator, based in Cat Ba Town.

Swimming

Swimming from the boat or at beach stops is possible and most boats have a water platform or direct access. The water quality in the main Ha Long Bay near Ha Long City is average — the bay is adjacent to a port. Swimming is better in the Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha Bay areas, and at beaches specifically rated as swimming spots.

Water temperature: warm year-round, approximately 24–30°C depending on season.
