Getting to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi is straightforward. The question is whether you’re heading to Ha Long City (the main port for cruise departures) or Cat Ba Island (the better independent base).
Option 1: Direct bus to Ha Long City
Multiple bus operators run daily services from Hanoi (My Dinh bus station or pick-up from Old Quarter hotels) directly to Ha Long City ferry terminal.
Duration: 3–4 hours depending on traffic and route
Cost: ₫100,000–200,000 ($4–8) one way
Operators: Hung Thanh, Hoang Long, many others — sold through hotel tour desks
If you’re on a cruise, your cruise operator will typically arrange this transfer as part of the package. Confirm whether it’s included before booking separately.
Ha Long City itself is not worth spending time in beyond the cruise departure pier.
Option 2: Bus to Haiphong + ferry to Cat Ba Island (recommended for independent travel)
The better route for travellers going to Cat Ba Island or Lan Ha Bay.
Step 1: Hanoi → Haiphong by bus (2.5 hours, ₫100,000–150,000). Buses depart from Luong Yen or Gia Lam bus stations.
Step 2: Haiphong → Cat Ba Town by ferry. Two options:
- Bến Bính ferry terminal → Cat Ba Town: 1.5 hours by hydrofoil ferry, ₫350,000–450,000. Comfortable, direct.
- Dinh Vu → Cat Hai → Cat Ba: Longer route by car ferry, approximately 2–2.5 hours total including road sections. Cheaper, less convenient.
Several operators also run direct Hanoi → Cat Ba buses that handle both legs for ₫250,000–350,000 per person. These are the most convenient option for first-time visitors.
Total time Hanoi → Cat Ba Town: 4–4.5 hours.
Option 3: The Ha Long Seaplane
Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO) operates seaplane flights from Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, with a landing on the water in the bay.
Duration: 35 minutes
Cost: ₫2,500,000–4,000,000+ ($100–160+) per person
Booking: Through VASCO or premium cruise operators
This is a genuine option for those combining a luxury cruise with the convenience of avoiding the long road journey. The view of the bay from a low-altitude seaplane on approach is excellent. Not a practical choice for most travellers on standard budgets.
Best recommendation
For a cruise experience: book with a cruise operator that includes Hanoi transfers. For an independent Cat Ba/Lan Ha Bay trip: the Haiphong ferry route or a direct Hanoi–Cat Ba bus is the best combination of cost and convenience.
Avoid crossing into Ha Long Bay during typhoon season storm warnings (typically June–September). Check the weather before departing — the bay can be closed to boat traffic for 24–72 hours during serious weather events.
