The Cai Rang floating market is the reason most travellers stay in Can Tho. The market operates at dawn on the Hau River — getting there requires a pre-arranged boat from the Ninh Kieu waterfront.

Cai Rang Floating Market

Location: 6km south of the Ninh Kieu waterfront on the Cai Rang River branch. Approximately 30 minutes by motorised boat.

Operating hours: 04:00–09:00 daily. The market is most active 05:30–08:00. Arriving by 05:30 gives the full experience.

What happens: The Cai Rang market is a wholesale produce market. Large wooden boats anchor or drift slowly on the river, each displaying their produce on a bamboo pole. Buyers in smaller boats come alongside, negotiate, and transfer goods. The main produce: watermelons, pineapples, sweet potatoes, cabbage, coconuts, and whatever is in season in the delta.

Separate small rowing boats move through the wholesale boats selling breakfast — ca phe sua da (iced coffee with condensed milk), banh mi, and fresh fruit — to the boat crews and tourists.

Tourist interaction: The market is not performed for tourists — it is a real wholesale operation. Tourists observe from the boat as the market operates around them. The boat crew navigates slowly through the market area.

How to book a boat

Book the evening before through your hotel or guesthouse, or directly at the Ninh Kieu waterfront boat operator stalls.

Shared boat: ₫150,000–250,000 ($6–10) per person. The boat holds 6–14 passengers. This is the standard option and gets you to the market efficiently.

Private boat: ₫500,000–800,000 ($20–32) per boat. Allows more flexibility in timing and which sections of the market you visit. Recommended for photographers who want time to compose shots without a time pressure from other passengers.

Negotiate the price: The waterfront boat operators are open to negotiation, particularly for groups. The trip includes the transport to and from the market.

The boat breakfast

The small rowing boats selling coffee and food at the market are part of the experience. Having a glass of ca phe sua da from a rowing vendor in the middle of the floating market at 06:00 is genuinely memorable. ₫10,000–20,000 ($0.40–0.80) per coffee.

Phong Dien (smaller market)

25km south of Can Tho. Operates from 04:00–08:00. Fewer tourists, more genuine wholesale trading. Access by bicycle (25km flat road) or motorbike. The ride from Can Tho at 03:30–04:00 in the dark on quiet roads is part of the experience.

What has changed

Can Tho’s floating markets have declined in scale since the 2000s as road infrastructure improved and boat transport became less necessary. The markets are genuine but smaller than their historical peak. They are still worthwhile — the Cai Rang market is active enough to give a real sense of delta river commerce — but travellers expecting the scale of historical photographs may find it smaller than anticipated.
