Day Trips from Can Tho 2026: Vinh Long, Ben Tre and Chau Doc

Can Tho’s central position in the Mekong Delta makes it the best base for extending into the surrounding delta provinces.

Vinh Long and An Binh Island (60km north)

Vinh Long is a delta city on the Mekong mainstream with river islands accessible by ferry. An Binh Island, reached by a short ferry from Vinh Long pier, is the best island cycling destination in the delta — fruit orchards, narrow canal bridges, and homestay accommodation.

Day trip from Can Tho: Bus to Vinh Long (1 hour), ferry to An Binh Island, cycling (20–30km), return. ₫100,000–150,000 ($4–6) for the bus. ₫5,000 ($0.20) for the ferry.

Overnight: An Binh Island homestays (₫250,000–450,000 / $10–18 per person including meals) are an excellent reason to stay a night in Vinh Long rather than rushing back to Can Tho.

Ben Tre (80km east)

The coconut capital of the delta. Ben Tre province canals — narrow waterways through dense palm groves navigated by rowing boat — are the most atmospheric canal environment in the delta.

Day trip from Can Tho: Bus to Ben Tre (2 hours, one transfer at My Tho), canal boat tour, return. Or hire a car/motorbike for the direct route.

The coconut experience: Coconut candy workshops, honey farms, and rowing boat canal sections are the standard Ben Tre tour. ₫200,000–400,000 ($8–16) per person for the canal tour.

Sa Dec — Marguerite Duras’s flower town

80km northeast of Can Tho, Sa Dec is known as the delta’s flower town — the streets around the Sa Dec flower market are lined with nurseries and cut flower sellers. It was also the hometown of Huynh Thuy Le, the lover in Marguerite Duras’s novel L’Amant (The Lover). The Huynh Thuy Le Ancient House is preserved and open to visitors. ₫20,000 ($0.80) entry.

Chau Doc (120km west)

The delta border town near Cambodia. Sam Mountain (Nui Sam) has multiple pagodas and a viewpoint over the flat delta. The floating fish farm villages on the Bassac River and the Cham Muslim community on Chau Giang Island are accessible by boat.

Day trip from Can Tho: Long (120km, 2.5 hours). Better as an overnight stop if time allows.

Practical transport from Can Tho

All major delta towns are reachable by public bus from Can Tho bus station. Motorbike hire (₫120,000–180,000 / $4.80–7.20 per day) gives more flexibility. Grab is not available outside Can Tho city.
