Vietnam Travel Insurance 2026: What Cover You Actually Need

Motorbike on a road in Vietnam

Travel insurance for Vietnam is worth having. Medical care in major cities is adequate, but medical evacuation from remote areas (Con Dao, Ha Giang highlands) is expensive and the main reason evacuation coverage matters. Motorbike accidents are the most significant physical risk.

What cover you need

Medical coverage: A minimum of $100,000 USD in medical expenses is the standard recommendation. Most comprehensive policies include this. Check that Vietnamese hospital bills are covered directly (or that you can claim reimbursement).

Medical evacuation: Coverage for helicopter or air evacuation from remote areas to a major city hospital, or repatriation to your home country. This matters most if you plan to be in remote highland areas (Ha Giang, Phong Nha caves, Con Dao) or doing adventure activities. Minimum recommended: $500,000 USD evacuation cover.

Motorbike coverage: Many standard travel insurance policies exclude motorbike accidents as a rider. This is the critical exclusion to check if you plan to rent a motorbike. Policies vary:

  • Some cover motorbikes up to 125cc with a valid licence
  • Some require a specific motorcycle licence endorsement
  • Some exclude all motorcycle accidents

Read the policy exclusions. If you plan to ride in Ha Giang or elsewhere, confirm coverage explicitly.

Adventure activities: Diving, caving (Phong Nha), trekking, canyoning (Da Lat), and other adventure activities may be excluded on basic policies. A policy covering “adventure sports” or listing specific activities is needed.

What to check in the fine print

  • Motorbike rider exclusion: Check whether riding a motorbike as a driver is excluded (very common on basic policies)
  • Licence requirements: Some policies cover motorbike riding only with a valid licence for the class of bike
  • Pre-existing conditions: Declare pre-existing medical conditions
  • Activity exclusions list: Confirm that your planned activities are covered

Backpacker travel insurance: Designed for extended travel, typically includes adventure activities and has higher medical limits. World Nomads and SafetyWing are the most commonly used by long-term travellers.

Annual multi-trip insurance: If you travel frequently, an annual policy covering multiple trips may be cheaper than single-trip cover.

Credit card travel insurance: Some premium credit cards (Amex Platinum, Visa Infinite) include travel insurance. Check the terms carefully — they often have lower medical limits and may exclude motorbike coverage.

Medical facilities by location

HCMC, Hanoi, Da Nang: International-standard hospitals available. Family Medical Practice (Hanoi and HCMC) is the standard international clinic with English-speaking staff. Medical expenses are manageable without evacuation.

Hue, Nha Trang, Da Lat: Adequate local hospitals. International clinics in major hotels.

Con Dao, Ha Giang remote areas, Phong Nha: Basic facilities only. Serious injuries require evacuation. Medical evacuation from Con Dao to HCMC (45-minute flight when available) or Vung Tau is the realistic scenario.

What travel insurance doesn’t change

If you have a motorbike accident without a valid licence and your policy excludes this, you pay out of pocket. The motorbike accident risk is the highest-probability serious injury scenario in Vietnam — it’s worth verifying your coverage for this specifically before hiring a bike.
